<dcvalue element="description" qualifier="abstract">Diamond-like&#x20;carbon&#x20;(DLC)&#x2F;poly-alpha-olefin&#x20;(PAO)&#x20;composite&#x20;system&#x20;attracts&#x20;much&#x20;attention&#x20;in&#x20;reducing&#x20;the&#x20;tribo-induced&#x20;risks&#x20;for&#x20;mechanical&#x20;mobility&#x20;systems&#x20;and&#x20;energy&#x20;saving.&#x20;However,&#x20;the&#x20;coupled&#x20;effect&#x20;of&#x20;applied&#x20;load&#x20;and&#x20;PAO&#x20;viscosity&#x20;on&#x20;the&#x20;tribological&#x20;behavior&#x20;of&#x20;the&#x20;DLC&#x2F;PAO&#x20;system,&#x20;which&#x20;normally&#x20;causes&#x20;the&#x20;transition&#x20;between&#x20;different&#x20;lubrication&#x20;states&#x20;of&#x20;mated&#x20;surfaces,&#x20;and&#x20;the&#x20;corresponding&#x20;synergistic&#x20;mechanism&#x20;remain&#x20;unclear.&#x20;Here,&#x20;we&#x20;fabricated&#x20;the&#x20;DLC&#x2F;PAO&#x20;composite&#x20;system,&#x20;and&#x20;the&#x20;evolutions&#x20;of&#x20;microstructure,&#x20;morphologies,&#x20;and&#x20;tribological&#x20;properties&#x20;induced&#x20;by&#x20;both&#x20;PAO&#x20;viscosity&#x20;and&#x20;applied&#x20;load&#x20;were&#x20;investigated&#x20;systematically.&#x20;Results&#x20;indicated&#x20;that&#x20;under&#x20;low&#x20;applied&#x20;load,&#x20;the&#x20;system&#x20;with&#x20;moderate&#x20;PAO&#x20;viscosity&#x20;exhibited&#x20;the&#x20;best&#x20;tribological&#x20;performance,&#x20;while&#x20;the&#x20;PAO&#x20;with&#x20;high&#x20;viscosity&#x20;was&#x20;suggested&#x20;with&#x20;increasing&#x20;the&#x20;applied&#x20;load.&#x20;Moreover,&#x20;the&#x20;variations&#x20;of&#x20;PAO&#x20;viscosity&#x20;and&#x20;applied&#x20;load&#x20;seriously&#x20;affected&#x20;the&#x20;distribution&#x20;and&#x20;load-bearing&#x20;capacity&#x20;of&#x20;oil,&#x20;interfacial&#x20;graphitization&#x20;degree,&#x20;and&#x20;formation&#x20;of&#x20;lubricating&#x20;oil&#x20;film,&#x20;which&#x20;brought&#x20;complicated&#x20;effects&#x20;on&#x20;the&#x20;tribological&#x20;properties&#x20;of&#x20;composite&#x20;systems.&#x20;The&#x20;present&#x20;results&#x20;guide&#x20;the&#x20;selection&#x20;and&#x20;design&#x20;of&#x20;an&#x20;advanced&#x20;DLC&#x2F;PAO&#x20;lubrication&#x20;system&#x20;according&#x20;to&#x20;the&#x20;working&#x20;conditions.</dcvalue>
