- Abstract
- In this study, the effectiveness of chitosan-based additives (CBA) in modulating grass prawn Penaeus chinensis and its resistance to WSSV were investigated. Feed supplemented with CBA caused a dramatic increase in growth rate and survival in shrimp. After cultivation during 3 months, we obtained a shrimp with an average weight of 27.5±3.97 g and body length of 17.0±0.79 cm. The quantification of WSSV genome was studied by PCR method. A pair of WSSV primers, designated WSSV 340F/R, was selected to amplify a 340-bp DNA fragment from the WSSV genome. CBA-fed shrimp showed that a high disease resistance to WSSV such as decreasing the degree of infection from 37% to 0% (zone 3) and from 64% to 0% (zone 4), respectively, compared to those fed an unsupplemented pond. There were no great differences in chemical composition, amino acid and the composition of unsaturated fatty acid between WSSV-infected shrimp and uninfected control. This result may suggest that the CBA effectively enhance the immune system and improved the survival of WSSV-infected shrimp and improve the texture of shrimp. The results indicated that in order to use immunostimulants effectively, the timing, dosages, method of administration should be needed to be taken consideration.
