Abstract
The extract of the red alga, Neorhodomela aculeata (N. aculeata), showed antiviral activity against human rhinovirus toward HeLa cells. Bioassayguided purification afforded six active compounds, which were subsequently identified to be lanosol (1) and five benzyl bromophenols (2-6) by spectroscopic methods including 1D and 2D NMR and mass spectrometric analysis, as well as comparison with literature data. Structurally, all of these compounds contain one or two 2,3-dibromo-4,5-dihydroxyphenyl unit(s). Compounds 1-6 are isolated from this red alga source for the first time. Moreover, compound 1 and 6 actively inhibited HRV2 replications with antiviral activity more than 50% without cytotoxicity in human epitheloid carcinoma cervix (HeLa) cells at a concentration of 6.25 μg/mL and 7.58 μg/mL, respectively. And compound 3 and 6 actively inhibited HRV3 replications with an IC50 of 5.29 μg/mL and 5.27 μg/mL, respectively.
