Abstract
Fine dust particles containing heavy metals retain the characteristics of their source. This allows for the identification and tracing of specific origins of contaminants by region and industry. Each domestic analysis research team has world-class facilities and expertise in both organic and inorganic analyses. However, sharing and utilizing data can be challenging due to variations in data collection methods, types of filters, analysis approaches employed, and other factors. This also applies to obtaining extensive knowledge about fine dust, including its physical, chemical, and crystallographic properties. For a comprehensive analysis that includes correlations between particle types, shapes, and pollutant origins, it is essential to establish a database of individual data. To accomplish that, a unified protocol is required, which includes sample preparation, analysis, and data processing. Since the protocol varies depending on the purpose of the analysis, type of materials, and equipments, standardization studies are necessary. In this study, we aimed to present the XRF analysis method considering comprehensive analysis for identifying contamination sources using SEM, XRD, ICP, TEM, isotopic analysis, as well as XRF. We developed a protocol that includes equipment specifications, filter types, pretreatment, standard samples, and analysis procedures by referring to the widely used US EPA IO-3.3 guideline for XRF analysis of inorganic components in fine dust.
