An experimental test rig which simulates the first critical speed transition is set up for measuring and comparing to a theory for vibration orbits of an overhung rigid rotor supported by a sealed and electrorheological fluid(ERF) squeeze film damper(SFD). With a test matrix of various electrical voltages, rotating speeds and without or without end seals, test results are compared to the theory. Experimental results show that vibration orbits at the first critical speed is hardly controlled without end seals. However, combined effects of end seals and ERF can be used for effective vibration control through the first critical speed transition. The theory reasonably predicts the experimental results. However, some modifications have to be considered at the end seal formulations.-
