Titanium alloys are in the spotlight for biomedical applications such as bone plates, dental implants, artificial hip and knee joints, because they have merits in biocompatibility, light weight, corrosion resistance and mechanical properties. Recent R&D issues of biomedical titanium alloys have been focused on alloy designs satisfying both non toxic biocompatibility and mechanical compatibility. Al and V in conventional Ti-6Al-4V alloys are replaced into non toxic elements such as Nb, Ta, Mo, Zr, etc., and new β-type titanium alloys with low elastic modulus are developed. The surface modification technology is also important topic for bioactive function of titanium alloys. This paper is giving an overview about recent R&D trend in biomedical titanium alloys.-
