Powder samples of Sr2CeO4 were prepared with a solid-state method and their luminescent properties were investigated. The shape of the emission corresponds to the Ce3+ emission, however, its origin is not clear yet. The first charge transfer band was observed at an unusually low energy of 29 kK. With this band the emission could be explained as a charge transfer emission. Schematic configurational coordinate diagram was presented. (C) 2000 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.-
