- Abstract
- Biodegradable polylactic acid (PLA) is relatively biocompatible and appropriately biodegradable, but it lacks the ability to interact biospecifically with cells. In order to make ligand-immobilizable functional PLA scaffolds for tissue engineering, two kinds of biodegradable crosslinked polymer scaffold networks were prepared with glycerol (G)-lactide (L) triacrylate (GL-Ac) and acrylic acid (AA) or poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) by UV photopolymerization. The bulk and surface characteristics and cell adhesion behavior of the obtained GL-AA network and GL-PAA semi-IPN network films were evaluated. The GL-AA and GL-PAA networks showed good bulk properties and AA-enriched and hydrophilic surfaces. In addition, the GL-AA network displayed more adhesion and spreading of fibroblast than GL one. These new hydrophilic GL-AA/PAA polymer networks are expected to be useful as ligand-immobilizable scaffolds for specific cell adhesion in the regeneration of artificial tissues and organs.
