Abstract
Performance of HABR (Hybrid Anaerobic Baffled Reactor) was studied in treating piggery wastewater. The 9 liter HABR with 2 compartments was operated in a laboratory with a hydeaulic retention time (HRT) of 6-0.375 days. On the average. more than 70% of TCOD was removed at both HRTs of 6 and 3 days. This high removal percentage may be due to the enhancement in the hydrolysis of particulate organic matter within the influent. In addition, the floating media in HABR increased the biomass, which enhanced the microbial activity within the reactor. At HRT of 3-6days, the butyric acid was found in the effluent of HABR. As HRT was reduced, the propionic of butyric acid was decreased and the propionic acid was increased in the effluent. The propionic acid accumulation caused by hydraulic shock load shows a shift in the dominant species of acidogenic populations. The methane conversion rate of the HABR was ranged from 0.34 to 0.36㎥ CH4/㎏ CODremoved at HRT of 3-6days. This means that most of the removed organic matter is converted to methane gas and the produced biogas could have high quality for its subsequent use. But, at HRT of 0.375day, the methane conversion rate was decreased to 0.28㎥ CH4/㎏ CODREMOVED. It is assumed that the reduction in HRT may provide the more favorable environment for sulfate reducing bacteria (SRB) than methane producing bacteria (MPB).
