We demonstrate a nonlinear ellipsometric method for measuring both the magnitude and the sign of the second-order cascaded phase shift associated with the type-I second harmonic generation process in a MgO-doped LiNbO3 single crystal. This method does not require a well-defined beam profile or interferometric stability because phase can be determined by simply comparing the two orthogonal polarization components of the fundamental output beam.
