Abstract
We examined the morphological and physiological responses of ‘Seolhyang’ strawberry seedlings to two distinct environments: a flower-inducing condition (short-day, 15°C nighttime temperature) and a non-flower-inducing condition (continuous light and 24-25°C temperature) during the critical flower initiation period. The seedlings were monitored for phenotypic variation, dry matter, and soluble sugar distribution. The results, analyzed via principal component analysis (PCA) and paired t-tests, suggested that a larger crown diameter, increased root biomass, and higher leaf chlorophyll concentration may be prominent early indicators of the reproductive stage of strawberry seedlings. In contrast, increases in traits such as leaf number, leaf area, shoot fresh weight, and number of runners might indicate a more robust vegetative phase. This study revealed that these morphological adaptations are linked to physiological shifts that enhance or diminish the capacity of plants to initiate flowering under favorable conditions.
