- Abstract
- Carbon fiber reinforced thermoplastic composites (CFRTPs) is getting increasing attention owing to their excellent mechanical properties, including low weight, fatigue resistance, and good recyclability [1]. There are different methods, such as autoclave, hot-press, and injection moulding, but there is no known technology for post-forming CFRTP that has been already manufactured. In this study, we introduce a new technology that can post-form a planar CFRTP into a three-dimensional structure using stitching technique. The laminated carbon fiber fabrics and polycarbonate (PC) films are stitched with conductive threads and then impgregnated with hot-press. When voltage is applied to the conductive thread, the CFRTP is partially heated along the thread. When the temperature reaches 150 °C (Glass transition temperature of PC) or higher, CFRTP can be folded along the thread. Therefore, once stitching is performed on a planar CFRTP with conductive thread as the sketch of paper origami [2], a new three-dimensional structure can be manufactured.
