- Abstract
- Due to their enormous therapeutic potential, induced pluripotent stem (iPS) cells have emerged as the most promising source for cell-based applications in regenerative medicine. In this study, iPS cells were subject to chondrogenic and osteogenic differentiation in vitro using either fibrin gel or biodegradable poly(lactic-co-glycolic) acid (PLGA) and gelatin.
As an adult stem cell, adipose-derived stem cells (ASCs) were also tested. While the iPS cells could form a colony only on the substrate of PLGA/gelatin film, ASCs were spreading and growing well on the PLGA itself as well as on the film. The cell growth rate of iPS cells was rather fast on the gelatin-coated plate. The gene expression levels of chondrogenic or osteogenic markers were notable with iPS cells, which were comparable with those of ASCs. This study indicates that iPS cells can be another useful cell source in musculoskeletal tissue engineering
