Abstract
Design optimization of a planar-type head, which is capable of producing a much higher write field than a conventional head, is carried out by head trimming. A step-like head trimming is found to be not desirable, resulting in a high half-width of the head profile. A very high write field of 11.8 kOe, combined with small values of the half-width and the side-writing ratio, is obtained in a suitably trimmed planar-type head. The results for recorded bit pattern generated by micromagnetic computer simulation indicate significantly improved recording characteristics with the use of the suitably trimmed head.
