- Abstract
- Dry eye syndrome (DES) is a prevalent condition that causes corneal damage and discomfort due to dryness. This study investigates Tetraselmis chuii, a novel food ingredient rich in polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) and carotenoids, for its potential role in DES prevention. Using a scopolamine-induced DES model in BALB/c mice, T. chuii administration increased corneal thickness and tear volume while reducing lacrimal gland tissue damage. Additionally, it inhibited immune cell infiltration in conjunctival and lacrimal gland tissue in a dose-dependent manner, suggesting a reduction in immune cell migration and activation. Western blot and RNA sequencing analyses showed that T. chuii suppressed pro-inflammatory cytokines and immune cell migration markers, modulating inflammation and immune-related gene expression. These results indicate that T. chuii supports ocular health by reducing inflammation and regulating immune responses, making it a promising natural therapeutic for DES treatment and prevention.
